TRT Monitoring & Labs

Testosterone therapy is safe and effective when it's properly monitored. Here's exactly what we track, why each marker matters, and how often.

Why monitoring makes TRT safe

Testosterone therapy is well-established and effective, but like any therapy it must be monitored. The right labs let us confirm you're in a healthy range, catch side effects early, and adjust your dose — the difference between TRT that's both safe and effective and TRT that's neither.

What we track and why

  • Total & free testosterone — confirms you're in an optimal range, not too low or too high.
  • Estradiol — some testosterone converts to estrogen; we keep it balanced.
  • Hematocrit / CBC — testosterone can thicken the blood; we watch this closely for safety.
  • PSA — a prostate health marker tracked before and during therapy in appropriate patients.

These guide which delivery method and dose are right for you.

Cadence and dose adjustment

We establish a baseline before starting, recheck several weeks after beginning or changing therapy, and then monitor periodically once you're stable. Results are always read alongside your symptoms — the goal is for you to feel well with every marker in a healthy, safe range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What labs are needed for TRT?
Typically total and free testosterone, estradiol, a complete blood count (hematocrit), and PSA in appropriate patients — plus related markers at baseline. We tailor the panel to you.
Why does TRT raise hematocrit?
Testosterone stimulates red blood cell production, which can thicken the blood. We monitor hematocrit and adjust therapy if it rises too far — a key reason monitoring matters.
Do I need PSA testing on TRT?
PSA is commonly tracked before and during therapy in appropriate patients as part of prostate health monitoring. Your clinician will advise based on your age and history.
How often will I need labs?
Usually a baseline, a recheck a few weeks after starting or changing your dose, then periodic checks once you're stable.
What about estrogen on TRT?
Some testosterone naturally converts to estradiol. We monitor it and keep it balanced — managing it only when needed rather than by default.
Can monitoring be done by telehealth?
Yes — we send lab orders to a facility near you and review results by video statewide, plus in person in Chatsworth and Santa Barbara.
