Safety & Monitoring

BHRT Monitoring & Labs

Good hormone therapy isn't 'set and forget.' The right labs, at the right intervals, are what keep BHRT both effective and safe — and tuned to how you actually feel.

Why monitoring is part of good BHRT

Hormones are powerful at small doses, and every person absorbs and responds differently. Monitoring lets us confirm you're in a healthy, effective range — not too low to relieve symptoms, not too high to be safe — and adjust as your body changes. It's the difference between guessing and dialing in your therapy.

What we test

Depending on your therapy and goals, monitoring may include:

  • Estradiol — the active estrogen we track on estrogen therapy.
  • Progesterone — to confirm adequate balance and uterine protection.
  • Testosterone — kept in a healthy female range on testosterone therapy.
  • FSH and other markers — to understand where you are in the menopause transition.
  • Thyroid and metabolic markers — because hormones interact across systems.

Cadence and dose adjustment

We establish a baseline before or at the start of therapy, then recheck after dose changes — typically several weeks later — and periodically once you're stable. Results are always interpreted alongside your symptoms: the goal is for you to feel well with levels in a healthy range, not simply to hit a number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will I need labs on BHRT?
Usually a baseline, a recheck after each dose change (often several weeks later), and periodic checks once you're stable. Your exact schedule depends on your therapy and response.
What hormones do you actually test?
Commonly estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone, often with FSH, thyroid, and metabolic markers — tailored to your treatment and goals.
Why do you adjust by symptoms and not just labs?
Two people with the same level can feel different. We use labs to stay in a safe, effective range and your symptoms to fine-tune within it.
Can I do the lab work near me?
Yes — we send orders to a lab convenient to you anywhere in California, then review results by video. In-person visits are available in Chatsworth and Santa Barbara.
Do I need monitoring if I feel fine?
Yes — periodic checks confirm your levels remain safe and effective even when you feel well, and catch drift before it becomes a problem.
Does monitoring apply to pellets and creams alike?
Yes. Every delivery method benefits from follow-up labs; the timing of the draw may differ by method, which we'll guide you on.
